Activity report for 2004-2005 by Dr Jim Smith

The annual meeting was held on 11-13th April and was hosted by The University of the West of England at Burwalls Centre for Continuing Education, University of Bristol. Thanks go to Neil Willey for arranging a very successful venue and meeting in Bristol attended by 39 participants.

The annual COGER lecture was given this year by Roger Higman who is the Environmental Limits Coordinator for Friends of the Earth and a spokesperson on energy issues. Roger gave a very interesting talk about the threat that climate change poses for human development and the role of nuclear power in combating that threat. He explored the impacts that climate change is expected to have in the UK and abroad and its relationship to other local and global environmental problems. He then outlined why Friends of the Earth remains opposed to the construction of new nuclear power plants in the UK. These issues were then debated in a 30 minute question and answer session.

The meeting next year will be held at Westlakes Research Institute and a provisional four day programme has been prepared for this 25th anniversary of COGER open meetings.

The committee would like to thank again the current sponsors of COGER: the Food Standards Agency, the Environment Agency and UKAEA.
