University of Portsmouth, Monday 2nd April to Wednesday 4th April 2012

The 31st Open Meeting of COGER will take place at the Royal Maritime Club from midday on Monday 2nd April to midday Wednesday 4 April. Professor Jim Smith from the University of Portsmouth will be the local organiser. The conference, accommodation and meals will take place in the Royal Maritime Club. Registration for the meeting is via this website. You will need to register on the site and then you can register for the conference from the Members area. Please complete the registration by Friday 2nd March 2012.

The main purpose of the COGER open meeting is informal discussion of active and proposed research concerning all aspects of environmental radioactivity and the arrangements will be similar to those of previous meetings. Offers of papers are invited: these will be 20-25 minutes in length plus five minutes for discussion. First year PhD students are encouraged to give a 10-15 minutes presentation describing their planned research. Posters are also welcomed and there will be a formal poster session. In addition, there is a section for news items and brief announcements in the programme. All participants who wish to make a formal presentation are required to produce an abstract (up to 1 page of A4) which should be submitted via the COGER website by Friday 2nd March 2012 . The abstracts will be made available online on the COGER website in due course. On the evening of Tuesday 3rd April the COGER lecture will take place. Details will be confirmed soon. The conference dinner will follow the COGER lecture.

The financial arrangements are as follows:

Band A Students who give a talk. Payment will be £0 as all accommodation and subsistence will be supported. A deposit will not be required however, given COGER's current level of sponsorship we reserve the right to charge a student who does not show up the full cost of the conference fee (Band C). Additionally, changes in sponsorship mean that COGER will only be able to support travel for a few students. Students who have no alternative means of financing travel to the meeting can submit a request along with their justification for support to the COGER secretary as soon as possible and no later than Friday 2nd March 2012. We will notify you whether your request has been agreed by Monday 5th March 2012. After this date no further requests can be considered. For those eligible students, travel may be claimed via the COGER claim form which will be available at the meeting. Costs will be reimbursed for travel by the cheapest means possible. Mileage will not be paid except under exceptional circumstances and must be agreed with the COGER secretary prior to the meeting. Any queries relating to travel costs should be raised with the COGER secretary before the meeting.

Band B Participants presenting a talk or a poster or students not presenting. A registration fee of £150 is payable. No support for travel is available. Please note that this band is only available for the lead author of a presentation or poster. Co-authors who are not presenting in their own right will be charged the Band C fee.

Band C Participants not presenting results. A registration fee of £240 is payable. No support for travel is available.

The remaining cost of meals and accommodation will be covered by COGER funds. Whilst in the past COGER has been able to heavily subsidise the cost of the meeting, this year we have only a small amount of sponsorship available. Despite this, COGER is still planning to offer financial support to all participants but COGER reserve the right to apply this to a limited number of participants should our budget be exceeded. Participants are therefore encouraged to apply early to ensure that support is available. Please indicate which band you fall into when registering. The Committee asks those attendees who can support their participation at the meeting from other sources to select the Band C payment so that we can maximise the participation of students and researchers at an early stage of their career. Students who are members of the Royal Society of Chemistry are asked to identify themselves when registering as we have secured sponsorship from the RSC specifically to cover your costs.

The conference fee payment should be sent to David Copplestone by Friday 16 March 2012 at the following address: David Copplestone, Biological and Environmental Sciences, School of Natural Sciences, University of Stirling, Stirling, FK9 4LA. Cheques should be made payable to COGER. A receipt will be provided at the meeting. Please note that it is now possible to pay the registration fee by electronic bank transfer or via an invoice but we cannot accept credit cards. Further details on payment options are available from the COGER secretary. Full time students eligible for financial support do not need to send in any money.

Please bring this notice to the attention of your colleagues and encourage them to attend if they have a research interest in the field of environmental radioactivity.

On behalf of the COGER Steering Committee we hope that you will be able to attend this year's meeting and we look forward to an interesting scientific programme and the opportunity of meeting you in Portsmouth.
